I have owned a 1974 Les Paul Custom (cherry sunburst) 20th anniversary since brand new. However I can't read the serial number on the head stock. The best that I can do is guess that the number is 26263. Can this be correct?, 1. Shine a small "penlight" type flashlight sideways at a very low angle (almost parallel) across the serial number area of the headstock. This creates shadow of the embossed area, and will most likely reveal the contours of number shapes. 2. Take a thin piece of paper, lay it across the area., First, you can tell which era your guitar was crafted in by merely looking at the logo. If you have an older model without a serial number, this might be all the closer you'll get to dating your Gibson. There are five iterations of the company's logo dating all the way back to 1902.
